Susannah Ray: A Further Shore: Exhibit
through April 8 at the Bronx Museum . Inspired by the boundless humanism in Walt Whitman’s poem “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry,” Susannah Ray has developed a new series of photographs on the waterways of New York City. In his poem, Whitman calls out to the tides, the gulls, the ferry passengers, the light, the clouds, the ships, the sailors, the waves, the cities on the far shore. In his eyes, all humans are divine, their reflected faces anointed by “fine spokes of light” in the passing waters. Ray will present a selection of images captured specifically in the Bronx. Artists are invited to apply to the Community Commissions fall 2017 open call. DOT Art is seeking temporary, site-responsive art proposals in all five boroughs for implementation in spring/summer 2018. This round, applicants may submit to install sculptural work on a triangle in the Bronx, a mural project in Staten Island, Manhattan or Queens or a multimedia installation along a chain-link fence in Brooklyn. Selected artists are qualified to receive up to $12,000 towards direct project costs in addition to engineering support. Projects are presented with support from built-in community-based partner organizations. Out of the Woods is the third of NYBG’s triennial exhibitions with the American Society of Botanical Artists, which is headquartered here at the Garden. Forty-two selected artworks capture strikingly detailed images of trees, all of them cultivated in public gardens and arboreta throughout the U.S.–including at NYBG– and around the world. The Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum presents Pysanky Workshop on March 3 from 11:30 AM - 3:30 PM.  Learn the time-honored art of creating intricately patterned Ukrainian Easter eggs, and make your own using a wax-resist technique at this hands-on workshop. Instructor Alesia Kozicky has been making pysanky all her life and has taught for over 25 years. Her work has been widely displayed, including at the Library of Congress and libraries throughout Westchester. Hot wax and permanent dyes are used, so dress accordingly. Ages 12 and older.
